Fermanagh District Council Employability Scheme

Wednesday, 15 August 2012

Fermanagh District Council is tackling the issue of unemployment head on!

The Council, supported by the Department for Employment and Learning, is offering opportunities to the unemployed. The aim of this project is to provide people not currently in education, employment and training with an opportunity to gain valuable work experience through an employability programme.

The Council recognises the difficulties experienced when leaving education. Often people find themselves caught in the cycle of ‘can’t get a job without experience’ and ‘can’t get experience without a job’.

The programme will offer a number of paid employment opportunities on a six month contract to unemployed people who have completed their school, college or university education within the last two years. It will provide a platform to gain experience and to improve their potential to gain employment.

A range of opportunities will be offered including:

  • Sports Development and Events Assistant
  • Technical Support Officer
  • Town Warden
  • HGV Mechanic
  • Quantity Surveyor
  • Construction Site Supervisor

Employment will be on a full time basis (i.e. 37 hours per week) and successful applicants will be paid £252.94 per week.

Councillor Thomas O'Reilly, Chairman of Fermanagh District Council, stated;

“The Council is delighted to be able to offer these valuable work opportunities to unemployed people who have recently left education. In the current economic climate it is vital that unemployed people get work experience to enable them to get a foothold into employment. We believe that these opportunities will give unemployed people the experience they need to progress into full time employment".

As well as the on-the-job training and development, successful applicants will be offered a range of suitable and helpful training, for example Essential Skills, Health and Safety at Work, Career Planning, Interviewee Preparation and Equality Training.

Completed application forms must be returned to Enniskillen Jobs and Benefits Office, no later than 4.30pm on Monday, 3 September 2012.
