| Enniskillen Castle Museums are pleased to announce that ‘more’ is the plan for the site this year! More opening days, more events and more fun to be had by visitors this spring, summer and autumn.
For the first time ever, Enniskillen Castle Museums will extend Saturday openings into April and October. The first Saturday opening in April will be Saturday 2nd from 2.00pm until 5.00pm. As well as a special free admission for everyone on this date – an extra treat has been arranged. Visitors are invited to enjoy a free walking tour of the town which sets out from the museum at 2.30pm.
And that’s not all … Every Saturday in April is jam-packed with special events celebrating everyone’s past.
Saturday 9 April, 2pm – 5pm – History in the Attic: Focus on Costume
Visitors are invited to bring along clothing and costume items that hold precious memories from the past or perhaps a contemporary piece that marks a personal milestone. Visitors can record their item and its story to create a feature within the summer exhibition – ‘All Dressed Up’, and also get a sneak preview of some of the costumes from the museum collection.
Saturday 16 April,3pm – 4pm - History in the Attic: ‘Cahir Healy (1877-1970): Nationalist Leader, Internee and Man of Letters’. a lecture by Dr Éamon Phoenix
Dr Phoenix is currently working on a biography of Cahir Healy and has recently published a key article on this important Northern Nationalist leader in the new book of essays, edited by Éamon Phoenix and Alan Parkinson, Conflicts in the North of Ireland 1900-2000.
Saturday 23 & Saturday 30 April 2011, 2pm – 5pm, History in the Attic
Enniskillen Castle Museums are asking visitors to bring along items relating to local and national history from 1910 – 1930. The ‘History in the Attic’ event will give visitors access to a database of photographs from this period. In addition, the Northern Ireland Screen’s Digital Film Archive will be available for perusal. Important film footage is available for viewing which shows Edward Carson and his opposition to Home Rule, the Inniskillings at the Front during World War 1, Michael Collins and the internment camp at Larne.
Speaking about the extended opening hours, Sarah McHugh, Manager of Museum Services said:
“This is a first for Enniskillen Castle Museums and we are looking forward to it as a way of making our site, exhibitions, events and collections available for more people at a more convenient time. In addition, it will make us a site for tourists to enjoy in April and October.
We are extending our programme of events for spring, summer and autumn so there will be plenty for people, local and visitor alike, to experience.”
