Description
This training session is designed to give artists the confidence and knowledge to build strong relationships with curators and to get the most out of their experience when working with a public galleries.
It will look at: Do’s and don’ts in approaching or presenting work to public galleries. Being clear on why you want to exhibit. Clarity of the artist’s intention for the artwork. Clarity of ambition and expected outcomes for an exhibition. Roles and responsibilities for both the artists and the gallery. Understanding element of planning an exhibition, time-line, budget and production value. The expectations and motivations for an exhibition from both the gallery’s and artist’s perspectives.
Séamus Kealy is Director/Curator of The Model in Sligo. Contemporary art projects at The Model under his tenure have included Ilya & Emilia Kabakov: Angelology, Duncan Campbell: Make It New John, Dorm, Reverse Pedagogy, Medium Religion, and Signals in the Dark: Art in the Shadow of War. Seamus Kealy has worked with artists such as Stan Douglas, Omer Fast, Gary Hill, Hans Schabus, Dorothy Cross, Paul Chan, the Kabakovs, AA Bronson, Critical Art Ensemble, Etienne Zack, Tilo Schulz, Catrin Bolt, Thierry Geoffroy, and many others. Previous to The Model, Séamus Kealy was Curator of the Blackwood Gallery, University of Toronto, Canada. Among his projects there was 18:Beckett, for which his “Ten Texts for 18:Beckett” was awarded the 2007 Curatorial Writing Award by the Ontario Association of Art Galleries. Other shows at Blackwood included Awareness Muscle, and Isabelle Pauwels: Triple Bill; awarded Best Off-Screen Exhibition at Toronto Images Festival.
Séamus completed both visual art (BFA) and curatorial (MA) studies at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada. For over a decade, he has participated in and/or organised exhibitions internationally and has held several international artist residencies, including being artist/curator in residence at both the AIR Studios and Museumsquartier in Vienna between 2002 and 2003.
Séamus writes regularly for international journals and artist publications. He has taught art and art history in various capacities, and has received various professional awards, including short-listings to national (2002) and international (2004) painting competitions, and diverse forms of awarded funding. His work is rooted in political activism and an evolving methodology in curatorial practice.
