NORMAN FRASER
Educated at Annadale Grammar School, Belfast, Norman Fraser then studied at Belfast College of Art before moving to Hornsey College, London. He has been exhibiting since 1967 and is recognised as one of a group of artists, emerging during the
late 60’s into the Northern Ireland art scene, who pioneered new technologies as mediums of expression.
His work is in many prestigious public and private collections in Northern Ireland and abroad. For many years he was an influential lecturer at the University of Ulster, formerly in Foundation Studies before moving to the School of Art and Design, Fine Art department in Belfast. He is now a full time artist working between his studios in Co. Down and Portugal.
The work in this exhibition has been strongly influenced by walks in the Portuguese hills, recording the evidence of the traces of human interference in the landscape. The works are not representational but have evolved through exploring equivalent processes in the act of drawing and painting such as layering, covering, uncovering, excavating etc. These processes allow for chance and unpredictability to give direction to the imagery and influence the artist’s creative decisions.
