Revisits is a body of work that has been revisited, recomposed, resurfaced. The practice of mimicking collaged images in paint, provides a base upon which Keown chooses to compose more mimicked images or abstract marks as a demonstration of her process. These canvases display the history of marks of decisions past, of the time spent and material layers that are unique to painting practice. Each decision is dictated by the formal considerations of the overall composition but each element in the paintings are sourced from all manner of visual culture.

The paintings are sometimes made in diptych format either because the composition brakes out of its original frame or because Keown is attempting to make figuration talk to pure abstraction. Some of the abstract surfaces are over thirty layers thick providing a surface that oozes the material paint. The figurative works are placed sideways to detract from their original context but they work compositionally because of their formal characteristics.

The overall impression one gets from Mary Theresa Keown's work is the idea that painting can contain anything but only works when its parts lend themselves to a cohesive formal unity. One gets the idea that these paintings can continue to transform on their next visit.

Mary Theresa Keown has exhibited widely nationally and internationally. Her work is represented in many private and public collections including O.P.W, A.I.B and most recently The Open University. She is a part-time tutor and lecturer in painting at the University of Ulster and is currently applying for a PHD. She is represented by the Mullan Gallery, Belfast. Mary is a native of Enniskillen and this is her first solo show in Fermanagh.
