Lakeland Forum Refurbishment Nears Completion

Wednesday, 28 January 2009

Refurbishment works to the value of approximately £1.3 million are nearing completion at the Fermanagh Lakeland Forum Sports Complex.

The main contractor for the design and build contract is McAleer and Teague, Building and Civic Engineering Contractors, Dromore, County Tyrone, while the Architects are Mullarkey Pederson Architects.

The Forum originally opened in 1976 and although alterations have been made over the intervening years, the building is showing its age.

The Centre will remain open during the Contract which is expected to be completed early summer 2010.

During the Contract, patrons will have to access the building from the rear and some facilities will not be available from time to time during the work.

The refurbishment will rejuvenate the external and internal appearance of the building, as well as creating improved usability and inclusiveness.

The new foyer for example, will provide a fresh, light filled, easily identifiable entrance to the Centre.

A new tiered seating area will be erected at the swimming pool which will provide visual connection with all areas of the pool whilst also establishing a connection with the nearby restaurant.

Councillor Thomas O’Reilly, Chairman of Fermanagh District Council (January 2009) said “The Council is continuously upgrading its services and facilities.  This £1.3 million refurbishment project follows the recent construction of a floodlit 3rd generation surface at the Centre.  The refurbishment works will include interior renovations as well as exterior works and it is planned that disruption to the Centre will be kept to a minimum.  Our aim is to provide as normal a service as possible during the works.  We are pleased with the design provided by the Contractors, McAleer & Teague.  These works will give us an inclusive accessible modern Centre.”

Dominic Teague of McAleer & Teague said “We are delighted to be involved in this Design and Build scheme, our team is committed to the local community and we look forward to working with Fermanagh District Council to ensure the delivery of a high quality leisure centre which we can all be proud of.”

Parking during the works will remain at the front of the building with a well lit pedestrian access to the temporary access to the rear of the building.
