It’s ‘hats off’ to the beautiful Forthill Park on Wednesday, 25 July 2012 to celebrate the park’s glorious green space as part of the nationwide Love Parks Week. A fun filled family afternoon has been arranged from 2.00pm to 4.00pm.
Catherine Scott, the Development Officer with Fermanagh County Museum, who is helping to organise in the event, stated:
“I am delighted to be involved in organising a second event in Forthill Park this year. In April our ‘Easter Picnic in the Park’ event attracted over 400 people. A fantastic afternoon was had by all, despite the showers. This time round we hope to build on the success of our earlier event.”
“We would love to see more people enjoying Enniskillen’s own Secret Garden.”
“On the day we want everyone, especially children, to wear their favourite funny hat. There will be all kinds of activities for all the family, including face painting, hat making, music from the bandstand, biodiversity games and trail, butterfly conservation, a short historic tour of the park and much more.”
On the day, Cole’s Monument will be open. Admission to the park, and all activities, will be free of charge. Everyone wearing hats will be rewarded.
GreenSpace founded Love Parks Week in 2006 with the simple aim of encouraging people to visit, enjoy and take pride in their local parks and green spaces.
This year the Love Parks Week focuses on access to healthy green spaces for all.
It aims to make people appreciate our parks and green spaces, whilst raising awareness that they are essential to a happy, healthy and strong community.
Forthill Park is an excellent space and when used in this way can lead to healthier and happier communities, especially when many people from the community come together to use the park.

“When Forthill was formally laid out by Thomas Plunkett in the 1880s, he believed the people of Enniskillen needed a space away from the smoke of the town – a place for a promenade and to relax whilst breathing in clean air.”
“The grounds were officially opened on 7 August 1891 by Lady Erne, with the Ferney, Fountain and Waterfall as the centrepieces of the park. With special trains from surrounding counties laid on for the event, an estimated 5,000 people attended the opening.”
