| The General Register Office (GRO) is part of the Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA) and is responsible for the administration and control of the civil registration of births, adoptions, deaths, marriages and civil partnerships as well as the formality of marriages and civil partnerships and the conduct of marriages and civil partnerships. Certified copies of all these events can be obtained from this office as well as general information to the public about all these matters.
The registration service in Northern Ireland is a partnership between the GRO and the 26 local district councils with District Registration Offices located on the premises of each council, which have acted as local registration authorities since 1973 and as agents for the Department of Finance and Personnel. Registrars are employees of local authorities but their registration work is governed by instructions and guidelines set by the Registrar General.
You may use the links at the bottom of this page for more information on Births, Marriages, Deaths and Civil Partnership registrations.
