Premises that are involved in the handling or production of the following foods of animal origin are required to be inspected and approved by the Local Authority or the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (DARD).

- Frogs Legs/Snails
- Rendered Animal fats and greaves
- Treated Stomachs, bladders and intestines
The approval of food premises of this type is to ensure that additional requirements above the general requirements for food premises are met, as premises of this type often involve more high risk operations. All food premises producing products of animal origin are required to be approved unless exempted. You should contact your local authority to see if you require approval.

No. In the interests of public safety tacit consent will not apply in respect of applications for approved food premises.
What can I do if my application is refused
If the Council decides to refuse your application you will be notified at the earliest opportunity. The reason for the decision will be given including the matters necessary to satisfy the requirements of 853/2004, etc. You will also have a right of appeal under Regulation 12 of the Official Feed and Food Control Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2007.
If you have appealed a Council decision and immediately before the refusal you have been using the establishment you may continue to use the establishment pending the result of the appeal subject to conditions imposed by the Council for the protection of public health. If the Council considers activities undertaken in the establishment pending the results of an appeal may present a risk to public health the Council will consider the use of other relevant enforcement powers as appropriate.
