School for Social Entrepreneurs Initiatives

Tuesday, 01 February 2011

Social Economy Masterclasses - designed for policy makers, social entrepreneurs, investors, public sector managers and business leaders.  The purpose of the Masterclass series (running from February to May 2011) is to facilitate, inform and stimulate policy debate.  Additionally, each event will provide attendees with the opportunity to see best practice social entrepreneurship in action as well as help identify potential business opportunities within the social economy – as customers, partners or suppliers.

The development of social enterprise is becoming more important for the local economy and can play a significant role in delivering the ‘Big Society’. There is a need, however, to create more awareness and stimulate more activity if Northern Ireland is to realise the potential of the social economy.  There is also a need to create more dialogue across all sectors and the series provides the opportunity for the private, public and social economy sectors to begin to build relationships for future partnership opportunities.

With this in mind, the following organisations - SSEI, UCIT, SEN, Enterprise NI, the Flax Trust and Charity Bank, sponsored by DETI and Invest NI, have joined forces to present a series of Masterclasses dealing with key social economy themes.  The events are free to attend and there is a great line-up of speakers.

To kick off the 2011 series they are focusing on Environment & Recycling, followed by Culture & Regeneration, Social Economy & Social Inclusion, finishing with Physical & Financial Capital.

The first Masterclass, on Wednesday 2 February, is included in the second initiative which is Management Month® 2011.  The School for Social Entrepreneurs is delighted to support MLN’s award-winning Management Month initiative.  This will provide local managers with up to a dozen free business, leadership and management Masterclasses during February 2011.  The month will also include a major Management & Leadership Conference in Belfast, at a time when the quality of our management and leadership, across all sectors, needs to be at its highest.  One of the keynote speakers at the conference is Nigel Kershaw OBE, Chairman of The Big Issue and CEO of Big Issue Invest. A champion of the Social Economy, Nigel will share his thoughts on leadership and the opportunities that exist for all within the social enterprise agenda.
