Richard Croft From Painting to Print

Friday, 31 August 2007

One of Northern Ireland’s foremost artists of still life and landscapes, Richard Croft RUA, will exhibit a new exhibition of his art work entitled “FROM PAINTING TO PRINT” at The Higher Bridges Gallery in the Clinton Centre, Enniskillen opening Friday  31st August 2007 at 8pm.
The exhibition will be launched with an opening speech by local Fermanagh Artist Mavis Thompson.

The exhibition illustrates fifty years of fine art prints / paintings by Richard Croft dating from 1957 – 2006. His subjects have a wide appeal and Croft has used a variety of techniques to create the images including lithography, etching, screen, relief prints & paintings.

Diane Henshaw, Arts Officer for Fermanagh District Council said “Fermanagh District Council is delighted to host this wonderfully stimulating high quality and dynamic solo exhibition by Richard Croft, a major name in the Irish art world. The Higher Bridges Gallery’s growing reputation for being a definitive nucleus in the North West for Visual Arts is again confirmed by showcasing the talent of one of our most important artists, who is represented in many public and private collections around the world.”

Richard’s work has been exhibited across both Ireland and the wider world, and this new publication gives a glimpse of the broad range and depth of his work, highlighting his relationship with both the rural and industrial landscapes of his adopted home. These familiar local landscapes are also interspersed with images of still life, all of which are underpinned by the high quality of Croft’s draughtsmanship.

Born in London in 1935, and educated at Bromley and Brighton Colleges of Art, Croft moved to Belfast in 1959 to teach art - firstly at Dunlambert School in Fortwilliam and, latterly, at Annadale Grammar School until 1986 when he began to paint full-time in his studio in Dundrum, Co.Down. Croft was a founder member of Group 63 and the Octagon Gallery and President of the Royal Ulster Academy from 1997 to 2000.

The Fine Print & Painting Show is being exhibited in The Higher Bridges Gallery at the Clinton Centre, Queen Elizabeth Road, Enniskillen, from the 31st August – 27th September 2007. The exhibition is free and open to the public from 10 am -5pm Monday to Saturday.
