New Rural Group Helps Improve Access to IT

Thursday, 30 August 2007

People from the town land of Drumskinney will have the chance to learn new skills and access the Internet thanks to the work of the recently formed Drumskinny Rural Action Group (DRAG).

DRAG, set up to improve facilities and delivery of services in the area, is working in partnership with digital inclusion project EverybodyOnline and the Western Education and Library Board (WELB) mobile library to help people get online.

A series of free Internet taster sessions will take place at Monaghan’s, The Cross, at the beginning of September, which will be facilitated by local volunteers and staff from the WELB Library Service and EverybodyOnline. People will have the chance to learn how to use a computer, email family and friends and surf the Internet.

Speaking about the taster sessions, DRAG Chairperson, William White, said:
“This is a real opportunity for people in the Drumskinney area to improve their computer skills and access free training.  These sessions will bring the world to our doorstep and I would encourage everyone to come along and have a go in an informal and relaxed setting.”

EverybodyOnline, a project delivered by the charity Citizens Online on behalf of BT and the Department of Finance and Personnel, helps communities across Northern Ireland take advantage of the opportunities digital technology and the Internet has to offer.

Project Officer for EverybodyOnline, Tracy Armstrong, explained the importance of giving people the skills and confidence to get online.

“Fermanagh is lagging behind the rest of Northern Ireland in accessing the Internet. With digital technologies becoming an essential part of everyday life, people are at risk of being left behind.”

Taster sessions will be held at Monaghan’s, ‘The Cross,’ on Saturday 8 September, 11am and Monday 10 September, 8pm.  To register your interest or find out more, contact William on 028 6863 1787.
