Biodiversity flying high at the Forum

Wednesday, 01 August 2012

A Daubenton’s bat survey training course organised by Fermanagh District Council’s Biodiversity Officer was held at Fermanagh House on Thursday, 26 July 2012.

The training was provided by Dr Tina Aughney, Bat Conservation Ireland, and the course was very well attended by a wide range of interested parties ranging from academia to those involved in construction of wind farms.

Daubenton’s bats are one of the more attractive bat species with a white breast.  This white colouring is clearly reflected on the water’s surface where the bat will skim along the surface, feeding on flies.

As part of the course, at 10.30pm the participants proceeded from Fermanagh house to the lough shore near the Fermanagh Lakeland Forum. At this location, four different bat species where identified as foraging, Common Pipistrelle, Soprano Pipistrelle, Daubenton’s and Leisler Bat.

If you take a walk along the path around the Fermanagh Lakeland Forum, stand on the shore and you will be sure to witness the beautiful Daubenton’s bats swooping in a balletic figure of eight over the water’s surface.  Overhead the Pipistrelle and Leisler bats will be gathering food around the tree canopies.
